Olduvai Gorge

After breakfast, the group departed for Ngorongoron Crater and a last viewing of game along the Serengeti plains.  On the way to the crater, we stopped at Olduvai Gorge (pictured above).  This should ring a bell if you ever took archaeology 101 or learned the evolutionary theory.  It is in the gorge that  Dr. Lewis Leakey and his wife Mary found humanoid remains of an early form of man along with a lot of an artifacts dating back to two million years ago.  It is nicknamed “The Cradle of Mankind”

Due to the areas’ volcanic activity, this area was continually covered over and over again by ash.  Our lecturer at the gorge pointed out how the layers allow us to peel back time. At any rate, it is here where the Leakey family along with other scientists discovered some of the earliest forms of human life.

After seeing the gorge and the museum, we heard a lecture talking about the different layers and what discovered there.  In addition to enjoying everything that I saw and relearning what I had forgotten about human evolution.

I also found myself enjoying the local birds which were very colorful.  Birds are tough to photograph, they don’t stay still for very long.

After leaving Olduvai, we headed to Ngorongoro Lodge, situation above the Ngorongoro crater.
