The Romantic Road

I guess you could call this Germany’s version of Route 66. Much smaller of course.  It runs north to south from the hilly vineyards to the foot of the Alps.  Medieval village after medieval village filled with castles, towers, courtyards, beer gardens, restaurants and shopping. The Romantic Road became popular in the 50’s and is a popular tourist destination.

I might have really enjoyed this if I hadn’t seen so many Medieval villages on my river cruise already. Things were beginning to look the same – another gothic church – another baroque church, another palace.  It was nice but not that exciting.

I visited two villages that day – Harburg and Rothenburg.  Harburg had a well-preserved castle.  Rothenburg has a nice village – a dessert called sno-balls (a ball shaped desert with various toppings such as confectionary sugar or chocolate) and Christmas Museums and shops.

This is the home of Christmas so why not sell it year around?  I found it hard to get into the holiday spirit since it is June and we are just getting ready to celebrate summer.  Even if it were closer to Christmas, I am not into buying, collecting any more Christmas decorations.  I am no longer into decorating the house for Christmas and then having to take it all.

As we drove to these towns, I again noticed the amount of people who have solar panels.  I noticed this all along the Danube river from Budapest to Nuremburg and on this excursion, the same thing – there isn’t a town where I don’t see solar panels and it is almost on every roof of every house.  Europe is really putting in effort into being green and US isn’t.  After installing solar panels on my house, I started to take note of where else the were installed.  Every time I go up in a building, I look over the houses for Solar Panels.  I am the only person I know that has solar panels, I don’t know anyone else.  Yet here in Europe, they are getting close to it being the “norm” to have them installed.

Pictures below are in Rothenburg – the sno-ball deserts, and pictures of the town.

Lunch – Bratwurst!  The Mustard is really growing on me!
