The Big Apple – NYC

I love NYC and I feel like it doesn’t get much better when I am headed there.   I know my visit will be short, but short is better than not at all.   Too many places to go and too many good restaurants to eat at.  I never get enough time in NYC.   I have spent a lot of time in NYC,  my mom was born in Brooklyn and she took me there as a teenager.  After college, I did a six-week project at the Hotel Pennsylvania, later I went to New York on business trips as well as on personal trips.  I have so many fond memories of the city and look forward to adding to them.

When I booked the flight, I realized that United no longer used JFK as their main hub, I would be flying into Newark.  For me, Newark will always be  that airport where I had a layover from hell.   I ended up spending the night in the airport.  It wasn’t just any night, I was moving from upstate NY to Los Angeles.  I had just graduated from college and purchased a one way ticket to Los Angeles.   Looking back on it, it was a lesson that things don’t always go as planned.

I didn’t plan out a lot of activities.  I planned to see my friend Allan and I had bought tickets to see the play “The Great Comet of 1812” but otherwise not a lot of plans.

We landed and took the air-train to Penn station.  As I waited to get a taxi to the hotel, I looked across the street to the Hotel Pennsylvania.  I snapped a selfie and sent it to a friend who also worked on the same project from hell at that hotel. Continue reading

New Orleans -Lafayette Cemetery

Lafayette Cemetery is located in the Garden District.  It takes up a city square block but has over 1000 tombs and 7000 people buried there.  It is also the most filmed cemetery in New Orleans including “Double Jeopardy” and “Interview with a Vampire”.

Most of the tombs had more than one person buried in them.   It was not uncommon to see generations of family members from the 1800’s until now buried in tomb.  It is interesting to read the names and try to figure out the relations between the different people in the tomb. Continue reading

New Orleans – Jacques Imo’s Cafe

Godzilla Crab

I found Jacques Imo’s Cafe via a list my friend Cindy sent me.  It had a lot of great reviews on Yelp and the pictures of the food looked good. That was enough for me.  Later I found out, that it had been featured on the Food Network many times which for me, is not a reason for going there.

As I have mentioned in earlier posts, I had been to New Orleans many times before, but it was on this trip that I realized there was much more to this city than the French Quarter, Warehouse district and the Garden district.  There are pockets of neighborhoods all over the place that are worth exploring.

We arrived at Jacques Imo’s Cafe and was told it would be 40 minutes until our table was ready, they would send a text.   We went walking around and was surprised when they texted me, had 40 minutes passed?  Where did the time go?  We had to walk very quickly to get back to the restaurant before they gave the table away. New Orleans – The French Quarter

Jackson Square

The French Quarter hasn’t changed much since I saw it last.  Then again, most of the buildings date back more than a hundred years, it would be a shame if it had changed significantly.  Some of the businesses have changed but it pretty much looks the same.

Bourbon street still has that same stale alcohol smell.  You cannot escape it, nor can you escape the loud music.   It doesn’t matter what time of day it is, there are always people walking around with drinks in their hand, often two.  Some of them extremely drunk.  I was probably one of them years ago but somewhere along the way learned a few things.

As always, groups of people (mainly men) stood on balconies drinking and smoking trying to tempt women into showing their tits for a string of plastic beads.  It never ceases to amaze me what can happen when there is alcohol involved how else would someone be enticed by a 50 cent string of plastic beads to expose themselves?

The atmosphere of the French Quarter is amazing.   I love walking up and down the narrow streets and taking it all in.  There is so much history.  There really isn’t any other place like it. Continue reading

New Orleans – The Garden District

Joseph Merrick Jones House (Currently John Goodman’s Home)

May 20, 2017

After brunch, it was onto the Hop on and Hop off tour.   After we circled the Mercedes-Benz superdome we headed over the Garden district.  We got off the bus and took a walking tour.  I am glad a took a tour, I had been to the Garden district before but I hadn’t taken a tour.  There is looking at nice houses and then there is looking at nice houses while be told who built the house, what they did and who visited them.  We saw the house that was the inspiration for Disneyland’s Haunted House, we saw the house that Anne Rice lived in.  We saw the house of the Carroll family and learned how Mark Twain would stay there when he visited New Orleans. New Orleans, Brunch at Atchafalaya

Saturday, May 20, 2017

We started the day with brunch at Atchafalaya.   After I gave the hostess my name, I noticed that a couple of women walked in behind us.  For some reason I took notice, both were impeccably dressed and one of the woman was just stunning.  For some reason, I felt like I knew her,  there was a sense of familiarity, it wasn’t just her face but her manners.  She noticed me looking and smiled.

I casually turned to Sophon and Cindy and pointed out the two ladies saying that there was something very familiar about the one and added the I think she might be famous.  It wasn’t until the following day when I mentioned to Cindy that I saw on the local news that Helen Mirren was in town, in fact she speaking at Tulane University’s graduating class.  She said that she used to live in New Orleans and was having fun getting re-acquainted with it.  Cindy made the connection and said, the woman we saw at Atchafalaya, that was Helen Mirren. New Orleans!

May 19th, 2017

A long weekend in New Orleans, a food destination that has more places on my list than I could possibly get to. There simply isn’t enough meals in a long weekend for all the places I want to go.  I am prepared for this trip, reservations have been made  at Emeril’s and Atchafalaya and a slew of bookmarks in Yelp.

I have been to New Orleans a half-dozen times back in the 1990’s.  Microsoft held their Tech Ed conferences in NOLA which I attended.  I haven’t been back since and am looking forward to going back.   A lot has happened since then, including hurricane Katrina.  It should be interesting to see what has changed and what hasn’t and how it has changed.

Sophon is with me and my friend Cindy will be joining us!  Hopefully, it won’t be too hot and it won’t rain too much!

After checking in to the JW Marriott, I turned on the TV while unpacking and getting myself organized.   Most of the channels were broadcasting live coverage of the removal of the Lee Statue.  I had heard that New Orleans had decided on taking down the confederate statues, I had no idea I would be arriving the day they would take down Robert E. Lee’s statue.  I guess I wasn’t going to get a picture of that statue before it was taken down.

Our first meal was Emeril’s.  I knew about Emeril’s from my days at Tech Ed but could never get a table.  I watched him rise to become the king of Food Network – there was a time that it seemed like the food network should have renamed themselves to the “Emeril Channel”.  Every time I turned it on, it was another Emeril Show.  We were not disappointed.   Food and service was top rate.

Afterwards we walked for a bit. Stopped at Andrew Jackson Square.

Baandam Museum

Dec 23rd, 2016

The next stop on our tour of Chiang Rai was Baandam (Blackhouse) Museum.  I am not sure how to describe it – studio/museum/house.  It was a collection of 40 or so ornate structures featuring the work of Thawan Duchanee, a Thai contemporary painter, architect and sculptor.   I have to admit, I am not a contemporary art fan, if someone has to explain it to me or if I look at it and I cannot figure out what I am looking at or why, I am not interested.  As I walked around, the only thing I was inspiration I felt was to leave!

Granted I was feeling a bit under the weather but I was having a hard time trying to figure out what the purpose any of this was.   There were these beautiful ornate Thai style buildings and then there was one in the shape of a whale.  The artist loved to use antlers to make objects and for decorations along with snake skins and alligator skins.  It was somewhat interesting to look at for 10 minutes but after that, I found it repetitive and pointless.  By the reviews on Tripadvisor.com and by the way the crowds of people acted, I guess I was in the minority.  I guess that is art and this was one stop I could have done without. Wat Rong Khun

Wat Rong Khun

Dec 23, 2016

I unfortunately lost a day.  I was fine on Wednesday until the evening.  I spent most of the night with a bad fever. On Wednesday, I made a trip to the International Hospital and was diagnosed with a bad infection.  I was given strong antibiotics and although I was pushing it, I refused to lose another day of vacation.  I had booked a driver to see a few things.  The first stop was Wat Rong Khun and no, this is not a Winter Wonderland!

Wat Rong Khun known as the White Temple is designed and owned by Chalermchai Kositpipat, a renown Thai Artist.  The white signifies the purity of the Buddha while the glass symbolized the Buddha’s wisdom.  I have seen a lot of temples, I have never seen anything quite like this.  Then again, this is technically not a temple. Sukothai to Chiang Rai

December 21, 2016

Got up early to catch our flight to Bangkok and then on to Chiang Rai.  I took a picture of the small hotel we stayed at called “Scent of Sukhothai”, it was really nice and the staff was very accommodating.  They even started breakfast a 1/2 hour earlier so that we could have breakfast before we were picked up to go to the airport.

We flew out on Bangkok Airways which we had been using for all of the internal flights within Thailand.  I have been pretty impressed with them. The call themselves the boutique airline.  This time the plane was an ATR-600, the same we flew out on.  These days it is not very often you see commercial planes with propellers.

We arrived in Chiang Rai, had dinner at Bella Pizza next door to the hotel and then went walking in the town.   At the center of the town is a big clock tower and hourly they light it up with different colors.  There is also a night market with plenty of souvenirs and plenty of food.  Sophon stopped to get his favorite snack.  I had to ask what it was thinking it looked like potatoes.  It is hot dogs, fish balls, tofu balls, and chicken balls cooked in hot oil.  With or without ketchup (which wasn’t served with) this did not sound good.
