Medocino Botanical Gardens

October 14, 2023

We were staying in Ukiah which is along the 101 Freeway which is inland.   We decided to head to the Coast and used CA State Route 20 to cross over to Fort Brag and then headed south to Mendocino where we found a botanical gardens.  When I reviewed my pictures from that day, I realized that there were very few pictures of the gardens but a lot of pictures of the coast.  In fairness to the gardens, it is fall, there isn’t a lot that is in bloom with the exception of the Dahlias.

When I left, I realized that we spent a lot more time than I had expected.  I really enjoyed sitting and just looking at how wonderful nature can be.   A lot of people think of California as being warm sandy white beaches when the majority of our coast line is anything but that.

We stopped for lunch in Mendocino Village.  The weather was cool and fog was rolling in.   The place caught me off guard, the town was filled with a mixture of Victorian housing and New England Cottages. We parked by a steepled white church where there was a birthday party happening at a couple of picnic tables.  I felt like i had set on to the set of Salem’s lot.   There were plenty of people walking around and I wondered, were these local people or were they tourists like we were.  After lunch, we drove through the town and it was very pretty and thought it might be a fun place to stay on another trip.

We drove back on another route which eventually turned into Orr Springs Road. It was scenic but it had a lot of hairpin turns.  It was also very remote, we only saw a couple of other cars and besides a few camp sights, there weren’t any residents.  I began to wonder just how far we would have to walk if our car had issues.   We did notice that on some of the mile markers, someone had place masks.  I saw a mask of an alien and a mask of a skeleton.   I really cracked up when I saw someone had modified a sign to look like bigfoot!  Obviously someone in the area has a sense of humor!
