I was planning this trip when I heard of Fat Rice, the Chef, Abe Conlon, won a Best Chef award in the Great Lakes region.  After looking at the restaurants website, I made reservations.  The food focused on Portuguese speaking Luso-Asian provinces with an emphasis on Macau, a group of small Islands off of China.  This was both familiar yet new,  I had no idea there was this mix of Portuguese and Asian foods.

I can see why the Chef won a James Beard award.   What I really enjoyed (besides the food) about this restaurant was how it wasn’t in the least bit pretentious.  It had a very relaxed atmosphere and the staff was very friendly and helpful.

From the outside, the restaurant didn’t look like much.  Once inside, it felt like we were in a different world.   The kitchen and bar was in full view of the small dining room.   The waiter was very helpful in helping us decided on what to order.   We had a bunch of different things in including hot dates, sardines, dumplings and their signature dish – Fat Rice, which seemed to have just about everything in it including chicken, shrimp, pork, beef, linguica sausage and rice.

 

After dinner, the waiter recommended walking a few blocks down the street to “Tiki Bar” to have a few drinks.  We walked down to the bar and as we did, we commented about how much renovation was going on in the area (Logan Square), it seemed like one out of three houses were undergoing some sort of renovation.

We arrived at Tiki Bar to find a very kitsch tiki bar.  Sophon, not being from the US was a little confused about the concept, but had fund with it once I explained it.   Most of the drinks were colorful, served with umbrellas and orchids, others were flaming!   It definitely was a fun spot but the problem with sweet drinks is that it is hard to have more than one or two.
