Regensburg

Regensburg was awesome.  It is a well preserved medieval city. In addition to hosting a gothic church and scenic streets, it is also the birth place of Johnny Depp’s hat from the Alice in Wonderland movie.  That alone was worth the stop but even sansthe hat, it was definitely a cool place.

Unfortunately, I was ready to shop. The cruise director told us all the cool things we could by there – and as tempting as a yodeling bear was, I  no long have nieces and nephews young enough to carry out my revenge on my siblings and my great niece is too young to appreciate the yodeling.  After all, she is still getting used to the x-box.

I really did want to pick up some sweet mustard an an apron (the apron thing is another story).  When we walked into town, we were told that it is a religious holiday and fathers day and that meant – everything was closed.  No joke, just about everything was closed, the streets were empty.  Typically, this would be a really packed pace, it being a holiday and everything being closed – it was dead.

Traditionally, fathers celebrate father’s day by starting at the pub and spending the day at the pub.  We would see as we went down the river, there were a lot of fathers and son’s spending the day fishing and camping.  However, there were a lot of fathers at the pub doing a lot of drinking.  One of the things that surprised me were the amount of men wearing traditional clothing. Yes, there were shops that you could buy the clothing and in many places, traditional clothing is worn during special ceremonies or as uniforms.  I saw not a large amount of people but quite a few people who were wearing the traditional clothing – not sure if it as because of the holiday but it was interesting.
