Oregon 2025 – Grants Pass

Wednesday, July 23, 2025

When I plan a trip,  I like to leave time to explore or just hang out.   This was one of those days that I didn’t plan anything,  but I did have a few ideas.

I had seen that there was something called “Wildlife Images” which specializes in helping animals rehabilitate.   As we drove to the facility, we passed Rogue Creamery, a dairy farm which makes cheese and serves grilled cheese sandwiches.   This was going to be our lunch stop after Wildlife Images.

Animal and ocean parks talk about conservation, research and education but I am generally opposed to using animals as entertainment.   I also question how much parks are driven by profit and at what point do we exploit animals.   I love going to a zoo and seeing the animals, but I cannot help but think, would these animals be happier in the wild?

There were plenty of animals to see at this stop – wolves, bears, eagles, vultures, owls and many more.  I think I spent the better part of an hour watching the bear play in its pool.  It seemed to be having a great time. Continue reading

Oregon 2025 – Hanging out in Grants Pass

Tuesday, July 22, 2025

We had breakfast in the main lodge and then went back to the room to take care of a few work-related items.  We then headed into Grants Pass.

We had driven through Grants Pass so I didn’t go with a lot of expectations.  I wanted to get a picture of the bridge over the Rogue River and to walk around the historic part of the town.

As we drove into the park, I couldn’t help but feel as if I could have been back in my hometown.  The John Deer mower was mowing the lawn; a bunch of moms were gathered at a gazebo where they were doing an event for the children. As we approached the river, there as a large group of Canadian geese.  I knew better than to mess with them; I also know that they make a mess wherever they go.  I was also glad to see mallard ducks.   It sounded and smelled like summer.

We then drove into town to walk around.  There was plenty of parking.  It is a cute town.  We found a couple of antique shops which were fun to look at as well as a gourmet store filled with kitchen gadgets.

Oregon 2025 – Crater Lake!

Monday, July 21st, 2025

I am really enjoying my stay at the Weaksu Inn, last night they had appetizers and later freshly baked cookies.  This morning, they had breakfast.  It is so peaceful and compared to where I am from, it is very green.   I feel like I could sit on the deck of the main lodge or in the alpine chairs on the lawn for hours.

After breakfast, we headed out to the Crater National Park.  Earlier this year, I bought a national park pass. It was the first time I had purchased one and I am making it a point to visit and enjoy our national parks and forests.

Crater lake is the only national park in Oregon and was about a 2-hour drive.  A portion of it was through a national forest.  As we got close to the park, we started the Guide Along App, which provided an excellent tour through the park. Continue reading

Oregon 2025 – Weaksu Inn

Weaksu Inn

Sunday, July 20, 2025

Yesterday, we headed to Grants Pass, Oregon.  Our first stop was to have lunch with Sophon’s aunt who lives in Visalia, CA.  In honor of our upcoming birthdays, she took us to a very nice lunch at a restaurant called the Vintage Press.  Even before Sophon’s Aunt said that the restaurant had been around a long time, I could tell.  It felt old school; the waiters were dressed in uniforms, the tables had white tablecloths, they brought out bread and butter before the meal.  It was very nice.

We continued to Sacramento where we spent the night.  I drive fast but I like to take my time and stop along with way and I don’t like a long day of driving. Continue reading

Redwoods 2025 – The Oregon Coast

Monday, June 23, 2025

We woke up early and went down to have breakfast at the hotel. As we walked to to the main building, I was suprrised at how cold it was.  Along the coast, it rarely gets hot and at night, the temps drop downinto the 50s.  Although it is summer, the highs for the day were in the 60s.   That doesn’t stop vacationers from dressing as if it were summer, we walked by a family in shorts and bathing suits headed towards teh pool.

After breakfast, we decided to head North to see more of the Oregon Coast. Our Guide Along Audio or the Oregon Coastline started further north.   We made stops along the way to view the coast.   We had lunch in Florence, Oregon, a very picturesque old town.

As we headed north, our Guide Along tour kicked in and the tour guide started talking about how that Florence was the home of the first viral video and it happened long before the internet came about. Continue reading

Amtrak Adventure Part II

Mt. Shasta

September 14th, 2018

I was up at 6 AM.  Actually, I was up much earlier, I finally got out of bed at 6 AM, I am not sure how much I had slept the night before but it wasn’t a much.  I was in and out of it the entire night.   Yes the clackity-clack put me to sleep but the screeching of the wheels or the sounds of another train passing in the opposite direction would wake me.  It was dark out and not much to look at. I was hoping to see the fires, but I never did and must have nodded off when we went through Redding

Breakfast:

I think we were the first ones to Breakfast, there was another guy who sat with us and we were pretty much the only table.  I noticed a lot of people bringing booze on board with them, perhaps they slept better than I did  or if they brought enough, were still sleeping it off.

The terrain had changed and had become very interesting.  Out the window, I could see a large mountain/volcano.  I wondered if it was Mt. Shasta, I asked the waitress and she said she wasn’t sure but I could be right.  Part of me wished that they announced the sites or gave us a guide of major sites.   Then again,  I am not always keen when i fly and a captain begins to announce every time there is something to see outside one side of the plane when I am trying to sleep. I pulled out my phone, checked google maps and saw that we were close to Mt. Shasta. Continue reading

Bing Mi!

Tuesday May 26, 2015

I think this was the best I had in Portland.  I found this mobile restaurant on yelp.com.  It sound interesting – a savory breakfast crepe popular in Beijing.  It looked delicious and I finally discovered the booth right after I had lunch on Saturday and there was a long line.  I returned out Sunday to find out they were closed and knew I wouldn’t be back in time to have one before they closed on Monday.  I made it a point to get up early and try it out before leaving Portland.  I am glad I did.

How did I miss this on my trip to China?  I was discovering this in Portland?  There is no doubt in my mind that if I go back, I am going to go back.

What is it?  In Beijing, it is a breakfast dish called Jiang Bing – a savory crepe with an egg cooked on  it with chili oil, plum sauce (hoisin), green onions and cilantro.  A cracker is placed on it and it is rolled up.  Sausage, an extra egg and cracker could be added as well.  I loved every bite!

Astoria

May 25, 2015

IMG_0341After lunch at a seafood restaurant, it was off to Astoria. Astoria dates back to the early 1800’s.  Lewis and Clark stayed just south of Astoria on the expedition in 1805 and 1806.  During my trip, I had noticed a lot of references to Lewis and Clark and there were a lot of signs indicting the sites of the original Lewis and Clark trail.  I realized that my knowledge of Lewis and Clark was from my grade school history lessons.

My tour guide was quick to fill in the gaps, the expedition was commissioned by Thomas Jefferson and was both scientific and economic.  We were trying to establish a route to the west to settle it before any of the Europeans could lay claim.  I don’t think my grade school lessons talked about the economic reasons but rather focused on the documentation of plants and animals.

Oregon Coast

IMG_0265May 25, 2015

I booked a tour with America’s Hub Tours to the Oregon coast.  I couldn’t have been more pleased with the tour and tour guide.  Our tour from Portland to the Oregon coast and back would take the better part of the day.  We would stop at several beaches, have a nice lunch and then move on to Astoria where we saw where the Colombia River meets the Pacific Ocean.

The countryside was stunning and as we approached the coastline, we went through an area that seemed to glow bright green.  It wasn’t a sunny day but I wasn’t sure that would have made it any prettier.   Continue reading

Colombia River Gorge

IMG_0155May 24, 2015

It was up early and off to Pioneer Courthouse Square to take a tour of the countryside outside of Portland.  I booked a Gray Line tour and I regret it.  Gray Line had oversold the tour and there weren’t enough seats on the bus for the number of tickets sold.  This was not a van but a bus.  Most of the day was spent waiting to get off of the bus and waiting to get on the bus.  Waiting for people who thought they deserved an extra five minutes.  I wish I had booked a smaller or private tour.

That said, what we saw was beautiful. Although it was overcast, the views were stunning.  Coming from Los Angeles (in the midst of a severe drought), I couldn’t get over how green everything is. I think moss grows on top of moss.  It was a welcome change!
