Montreal – Final Day!

Mary, Queen of the world Cathedral

Tuesday June 3rd, 2025

All good things must come to an end and it was time to return home.   The good thing about flights heading west is the time change;  we didn’t have to get up at the crack of dawn to get home at a reasonable time.  We got up, had breakfast at the hotel.  Unfortuatenately, breakfast at the hotel was a disaster.   They were seriously understaffed and they told us they ran out of coffee.

It was another beautiful spring day so we went walking.   On our walk we saw the Marie Reine Du Monde Basilque or the Mary, Queen of the world Cathedral. The building was beautiful, so we went in.  Upon walking in, I had no doubt that it was modelled after St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome but on a much smaller scale.  I also couldn’t help but notice that the paintings which depicted Montreal’s history.  Typically, artwork in churches and cathedrals depict biblical scenes. Montreal – The Waterfront

La Grande roue de Montréal

June 2, 2025

After we finished with the botanical gardens, we took the metro back and we had lunch in a food court and then we stopped at McDonalds just to see what the menu looked like.   I loved seeing the Canadian Maple leaf on the McDonald’s arches.  I enjoy seeing how McDonald’s localizes their menus in other countries.   The entire menu was in French, as far as I could tell from the pictures, it pretty much looked like what we would get her in the USA.

We headed back to the Old Town to see the waterfront.   We walked along the waterfront and bought a few souvenirs, including Maple Syrup, and then continued to the La Grande roue de Montréal, or Montreal’s Ferris wheel.  The views were amazing, and I was so glad we had nice clear weather!

All in all a very busy day with a lot of walking!  When I checked my phone app, I had tripled the number of steps that I normally take! Continue reading

Montreal – The Botanical Gardens

Monday, June 2, 2025

I love visiting botanical gardens. I was watching the weather forecast and wondered if we were going to have a sunny day.  I was so glad when I saw that the day before we left was going to be sunny but cool.

The botanical garden is located next to the Olympic stadium.  We bought a Metro day pass and took the Metro to the botanical gardens.   We got there as it was just opening.  We started with the greenhouses and then headed to the gardens.

As we walked through the gardens, I couldn’t help but wish I could come back every week.  Winters are long in the northeast; when it finally gives way to spring, summer and fall, different things bloom on a regular basis. Continue reading

Montreal – The Biodome

Sunday, June 1, 2025

We headed to Tim Hortons to get a quick cup of coffee and a breakfast sandwich.  Tim Hortons is a fast food chain and they are everywhere in Canada and are a part of the Canadian culture.  I try to stop by one every time I go to Canada.  Although it is the first day of June, it was a cold, windy and wet morning.

We decided that we were going to try to navigate the Metro. The tour guides had mentioned that the same people who designed the Metro in Paris helped in the design of Montreal’s Metro.  I looked at a map and thought I could navigate my way to the Biodome.  I also learned that google maps gives step by step instructions.

The Metro was clean, safe and smooth; our previous tour guide mentioned that it uses Michelin rubber tires as opposed to the rails making it smoother and quieter.  We had no problem getting to the Biodome.

The Biodome is housed in one of the Olympic Stadiums in the Olympic Park.  Montreal hosted the Olympics in 1976.  It was the year that Nadia Comaneci scored a perfect 10.  At any rate, the velodrome was converted into a Biodome that houses 5 different habitats in North America – including the habitats of the gulf of St. Lawrence habitat, a tropical rainforest, a maple forest and a sub-polar region – complete with trees and animals. Montreal – The Underground City

The Ring

Saturday, May 31, 2025

We went back to Universal Dejeuners et Grillades for breakfast. As much as I loved their breakfast poutine, I opted for a somewhat lighter and healthier breakfast.  It was supposed to be a cold and rainy day; I decided to book a walking tour Montreal’s Underground city with MTL Detours. After breakfast, we walked over the meeting point.  We arrived early and decided to check out the lobby of the Reina Elizabeth (Queen Elizabeth) Fairmount Hotel.

When the tour started, the guide explained that the Underground City, which is officially named RESO, is a bit of a misnomer, it was more of an underground network.  It started in one place to allow people to get from one building to another without having to go outside and it grew.   Today, it consists of 20 miles of underground tunnels that connect buildings, shopping centers, metro and train stations. Montreal – Old Town

Montreal City Hall

Friday, May 30, 2025

We started the morning with breakfast at Universal Dejeuners et Grillades. I really enjoyed this restaurant; I had the breakfast poutine which is basically poutine with a fried egg.  Sophon had French Toast with Berries and Nutella.  Not exactly a healthy breakfast to start the day.

We had booked a small group walking tour of Old Town with MTL tours.   We met up with the tour out front of Notre Dame cathedral.  As with the previous tour, it was explained that Montreal is an Island that sits between the St. Lawrence and the Ottawa Rivers. It is about 10 times the size of Manhattan.

The name means Royal Mountain.  It was named by Jaques Cartier who is credited for discovering Canada.  He climbed the hill in the middle of the Island and named it Mount Royal.  As with our previous guide, we were told not to call it a hill.  I am no expert; I don’t think you can call it a mountain. Montreal – All Day Tour

Montreal

Thursday May 29, 2025

We woke up early and saw that there was a bakery not to far from the hotel.   It was in the RESO network known as the Underground City.  We stopped by the desk to get directions, they were confusing at best, go up and down stairs, follow the hallways and eventually you will get to a train station.   To be honest, I am not sure how we found it and I wondered if we were going to find our way back to the hotel.   The coffee and pastries made it all worth the adventure and along the way, we found a lot of interesting restaurants.

We had scheduled an all day tour as an introduction to Montreal.  Our tour guide/driver was there to pick us up at the hotel right on time.  The company promised it would be a small tour and there was a total of 8 people in the group.  My issue with larger groups is that you spend more time getting on and off the bus, waiting for people who didn’t get back and more bathroom breaks.

Everyone on tour was very nice but there was one woman who scheduled a 5:00 PM dinner reservation right after the tour followed by tickets to Cirque Du Soleil. I couldn’t help but think, that is one long day! Continue reading

Montreal 2025

Wednesday, May 28, 2025

We are off to Montreal.  I grew up in upstate New York and we vistied Toronto frequently.  I recently took trips to the Canadian Rockies and really enjoyed it. have never been to Montreal.   I thought it was time to explore Montreal.

We were flying Air Canada.  Typically, I fly on United, both Air Canada and United are part of the Star Alliance.  As I sat in the Maple Leaf Lounge at LAX, I couldn’t help but notice a difference in the quality.  United has been remodeling their lounges and they feel like giant cafeterias.   The food at the Maple Leaf lounge was good and they served it on real plates.

Overall, we were impressed with Air Canada, the terminal wasn’t nearly as crowded, we didn’t spend much time waiting in lines and the staff was extremely friendly nice.

We landed about 8:00 PM and although it took longer than I expected to get an Uber, the drive to Downtown was short.  We were staying at the Renaissance hotel.  We checked in, dropped our luggage and headed out to find something to eat. Continue reading

Yoho National Park – Natural Bridge

September 23rd, 2024

Our last stop of the day was the natural bridge which is just down the street from Emerald Lake.  It was a short and easy stop that was close to the parking lot.   At one point, I was waiting for a few people taking selfies, to get off the bridge.  When they left, I said to Sophon, “Finally!”, the people next to me heard the comment and added that they had been waiting twenty minutes and were annoyed.   I get it, we want pictures without any other tourists in them.

We headed back to Banff and a place to have dinner.  Banff is pretty town!  Earlier in the day, I had noticed an Irish Pub called St. James Gate. We both love pub food so we decided to give it a try.  We ordered everything family style and shared a fish and chips along with a bangers and mash.   What really stood out was the Guinness Dubliner Cheese appetizer that was served hot with rye bread.   I made it a point to take a picture of the menu and went searching for recipes when I got back to the hotel room.

Overall, a wonderful day, we really enjoyed everything that we saw and did.

Yoho National Park – Emerald Lake

September 23rd, 2024

After hiking to the falls we stopped at Emerald Lake.   There isn’t any doubt as to why the lake is called Emerald Lake.  The lake’s color comes from the melting glaciers. When we visited a glacier field earlier in the year, the guide explained how glaciers move and as they do, the create a fine rock flour and as glaciers melt, it gives rivers and lakes an emerald color.

We hiked up the hill where the lodge was and then we hiked back down and around to the other side of the lake. This was an impressive place to see.  As with other places, I noted that there were a lot of people who were obsessed with taking their selfies and pictures for the Instagram.  I found myself wondering do they ever take a minute and appreciate what they are looking at.   I finally gave in a snapped a selfie before we headed back to the car.
