Hawaii Food and Wine Festival 2017 – Spice Market

November 2, 2017

I have been attending this event for a few years now and continue to love it.  The lineup of chefs change every year but they have a lot of the same events year after year.  Thursday night is on the pool deck at the Modern Hotel, Friday is on top of the Hawaii Convention Center, Saturday is in Ko Olina and Sunday (and of my favorite events) is the Brunch at the Outrigger Reef.

I started coming to this event with my friend Cindy. Unfortunately, she could not make it last year due to the timing of it.  Both of us were glad that she made it this year.  It is one of our favorite events and even though I continued to go without her, I felt bad she couldn’t go.

One of the best things about the event is that it raises money for local culinary schools, agricultural programs and other organizations.  Not only am I attending a great event, I am contributing to something I believe in.

This year, I decided I wasn’t going to put a lot of pictures of food out there.   I would take a few pictures of the event and focus on enjoying the food.   Our first event was the Spice Market.  Every dish we had at the Spice Market was very good.  At the end of the night, we were trying to decide who had the best dish and between none of us agreed.  I liked the dish Noi Thai put out, Sophon liked another dish and Cindy liked a third.

We had dined at The Lady and the Pig in downtown Honolulu earlier in the week and noticed a group of guys that were being served a special dish.  We thought it was probably a group of Chefs and it turned out that it was.  One of them was standing in for Ming Tsai who could not make it.  We talked with him for a bit, he was a very nice.

Cindy really liked one particular Chef.  I won’t name him but he is from Japan and is a Celebrity Chef back in Japan and according to Cindy, has really nice hair.
